Three Counties Gala
|
On the 14th December 2008 I took a team of 61 swimmers to the Three Counties Gala at Peterborough. This team included 24 new caps with two new swimmers as young as 9 years old. Suffolk has held the trophy for a number of years now and the team were determined to bring it back to Suffolk once more. It is always an exciting event with many swimmers competing for the County for the first time. Suffolk had some excellent wins including some brilliant relay races. There are too many wins to mention all the swimmers but congratulations to you all. I hope to be able to select many of you again in the years to come. The results are on the website if anyone wishes to look at them and the results are as follows.
The final points were as follows. |

SUFFOLK COUNTY ASA -
SWIMMING REPORT
Suffolk County A.S.A travelled to Sheffield at the weekend for the Annual National Team Championships. This is the most prestigious events in the swimming calendar for County teams throughout the Country and once again Suffolk performed brilliantly. Suffolk managed to maintain the 8th position in Division 1 they achieved last year.
A good number of the team were at the younger end of the two year age group but were still highly placed. Rebecca Reader got the ball rolling in the first event, the Girls 16/17 100 metres Freestyle finishing in 3rd place with a new personal best time of 58.09 and then went on a few events later to claim 5th place in the 100 metres Backstroke. Fourteen year old Ellis Jackson also swam two individual events, the 14/15 100 Butterfly and 100 metres Backstroke. Not only did she get two 3rd places but her Butterfly time was a massive personal best time of 1.03.30.
Next up on the starting block was Pascale Reeves in the 12/13 100 metres Freestyle, she swam a lifetime best time of 59.49 breaking the magic minute by half a second finishing in 5th place. Both Alex Harrison in the 14/15 Girls 100 metres Breaststroke and Amy Swallow in 16/17 100 metres Breaststroke swam back into form. Alex swam a brilliant 1.12.29 finishing in 2nd place and Amy a 3rd place in the older age group.
Other notable individual swims came from Aaron Lynch, Troy Lynch, Rose Cross, Nathan Henderson, Lewis Coleman and Joshua Coleby, all of whom swam new personal best times.
Suffolk finished the gala with two amazing relay swims, the Girls 16/17 Medley Relay and the Girls 14/15 Medley Relay. The older girls despite losing a swimmer the last moment due to injury finished in a very creditable 5th position, one of our highest for sometime. The younger girls finished 3rd in a very close race only 0.03 of a second behind Durham.
Despite being one of the smaller Counties in the country Suffolk finished the event in a creditable 8th place with 337 points.
On a personal note I would like to congratulate all the swimmers who took part, not only for their great performance at the pool but for the way they represented themselves, their clubs and the County at the hotel. Some other hotel guests commented on how quiet and well behaved they were. Thank you everyone.

Suffolk Team Finish 8th at the
National Team Championships
A report from the team manager
The National Team Championships is the most prestigious event in the year with 38 counties competing in two Divisions. Suffolk were promoted to Division 1 two years ago and last year Suffolk finished in a very creditable 14th place. This year the team upped the game to finish in a fantastic 8th position.
Everyone swam brilliantly, each swimmer gaining valuable points for the County. There were however some outstanding performances. Alex Harrison not only won her event the 12/13 100m Breaststroke but she gained a new County record time of 1.12.02. Aaron Lynch followed Alex in the boys 12/13 Breaststroke and he too produced a new personal best of 1.10.89 coming 2nd in that event. Aaron went on to win the 100m Freestyle in another best time of 55.37.
Sophie Chamberlain also produced two very creditable swims in the 14/15 100m Butterfly and Breaststroke also in personal best times. Lewis Coleman was the next one up finishing 3rd in the 14/15 boys 100m Breaststroke and 4th in 100m Freestyle again producing new best swims.
The experienced Mark Stevens, 17, who has swum for Suffolk in this event every year since he was 12 years old swam a very gutsy 100m Butterfly finishing in 9th place. Ellis Jackson was the next swimmer on the block. She finished 2nd in 12/13 100m Butterfly in a new best time of 1.05.58 and then swam a brilliant backstroke race annihilating the opposition in another record breaking time of 1.0400.
Rebecca Reader who had to swim twice in a very short space of time finished 10th in the 100m Freestyle and 12th in the 100m backstroke. Jack Hollis, Rebecca’s team mate had to wait until nearly the end of the gala before his race but swam the 12/13 100m Butterfly in a new personal best time of 1.06.77 to finish in 10th position.
We now come to the relay events which always prove to be an exciting and nail biting time. Jasmin Cross and Zoe Smith travelled up to Sheffield just to swim in the relay and wow was it exciting. They joined Alex Harrison and Ellis Jackson in the 12/13 200m Medley team event and the girls gave Suffolk their 1st ever relay win at this event, fanatastic!!!. Two other boys also just came to swim relays, George Bartle who swam an amazing Freestyle leg in the boys 12/13 medley relay to gain them 7th position and Jason Rodd who swam in the boys 14/15 relay.
The climax to the gala was the mixed 300m freestyle team race with a boy and girl from each age group. Our swimmers were Ellis Jackson, Aaron Lynch, Rebecca Reader, Lewis Coleman, Alex Seal and Troy Lynch. It was exciting from start to finish with Suffolk really pushing hard. We finally finished in 10th position but it was a really close fought race and a perfect end to our day.
I should like to thank the team as a whole, not only for their superb performances but for their excellent behaviour and team camaraderie. They are a credit to the County and their clubs. |
